Types of therapy

At our outpatient rehabilitation center, we offer three primary modes of treatment: physical, occupational and speech therapies. Many patients will receive more than one type of therapy.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy (PT) is focused on easing pain and restoring range of motion through strengthening and movement exercises. PT is often indicated following an orthopedic injury, such as a sports injury, but is also used to treat other conditions. At our hospital's outpatient rehabilitation center, our rehabilitation specialists use PT to treat orthopedic conditions, neurological conditions, general medicine conditions and vestibular (inner ear) and related balance disorders.

Physical therapy is most often implemented for our joint replacement patients, including total knee, hip and shoulder replacements. Physical therapists at our hospital have extensive experience in treating joint replacement patients and will develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on helping patients relearn tasks of daily living. Often times following a neurological incident, traumatic injury or surgery, patients are not able to move the same way they could before. Occupational therapists focus on helping patients learn new ways to complete activities of daily life, such as bathing, dressing and eating, sometimes with the aid of assistive devices.

The occupational therapists at our outpatient rehabilitation center commonly perform hand therapy and splinting in conjunction with occupational therapy. Patients recovering from the following conditions are commonly treated with OT at our hospital:

  • Head trauma
  • Joint replacements
  • Rotator cuff repair surgery
  • Stroke

Occupational therapists will evaluate your capacity for self-care and customize your treatment plan.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy is focused on helping patients communicate. Communication problems may result from certain speech disorders, swallowing disorders, stroke or brain injuries. The rehabilitation center's speech-language pathologists work with patients to improve communication through a variety of methods, including speech, language, voice and cognitive training.
